Martin Damsbo becomes first archer to reach 50 World Cup stage appearances
Martin Damsbo has become the first archer to appear at 50 stages of the Hyundai Archery World Cup over the international circuit’s 14-year history.
There have been 53 stages of the Hyundai Archery World Cup held to date, including the most recent in Antalya. Martin has been to all of them except Shanghai in 2006, Dover in 2007 and Shanghai, again, in 2019.
“I’m lucky enough to still have a level where I can qualify and still maintain the dream that I can take it all the way,” he said. “And maybe I’m just too stubborn to stop.”
“Of course, it’s always fun to be the first to break a barrier – but I think all of us have been on this amazing journey together. So many people won’t get to have this kind of experience and I’m just super happy that I’d have the chance to have a life others can only dream of.”
Damsbo and Pagni have also won the international circuit during their tenures, the former in 2013 and the latter in 2009 and 2010. Elzinga was runner-up at the inaugural final in 2006.
“I feel lucky to be in the same club with these great archers who are also great friends, great opponents and people I look up to on the shooting line,“ said Martin. “And as long as I still think it’s fun and I can still shoot at a level where I can qualify, then I will keep shooting these events.”
A total of 3287 different athletes from 113 countries have competed on the Hyundai Archery World Cup since it was launched in 2006.
Nine archers have been to more than 40 stages of the circuit, 36 have appeared at more than 30, and 114 have been to 20-plus.
Brady Ellison leads all archers in the number of appearances at the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final, qualifying for his 10th in 2019. This season will also be Braden Gellenthien’s eighth. Reo Wilde and Deepika Kumari have each been to seven so far.
